Spring 1999

PROPHECY RINGS TRUE!

In the Spring 1998 issue of PONDerings, we called attention to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation. We mentioned that it appeared to be unfolding as a significant weather event...and it proved to be more than even we thought!

The 1998 season was a challenge. All of us at AQUA DOC are excited about the 1999 season. Our new Watergardening Division should prove to be a great addition to our product line.

NATURAL ALGAE CONTROL

Nature's Weed Control is the first biological or natural algae control product that works directly on filamentous algae. In recent years, there have been a flood of new biological and natural products introduced to attempt to control filamentous algae. These products try to indirectly control the algae by taking up nutrients from the water, thus starving the plants. While these products are environmentally friendly if used correctly, they are not very affective against filamentous algae. Filamentous algae grows on the pond bottom, and can get all the nutrients it needs from the muck. In addition, once an algae mat rises to the water surface, it contains enough nutrients to sustain growth.

Nature's Weed Control contains a naturally occurring compound (found in plants, animals, and even humans) that works directly on the algae. This compound changes the osmotic balance (the balance of ion concentrations inside and outside) of the algae cell. The cell thinks the pond has dried up, and changes the concentrations of ions inside the cell to match what it believes are the conditions outside of the cell. Since the pond has not dried up, the osmotic balance is upset and the cell collapses from the greater pressure of the extracellular water.

Nature's weed control may be the solution to filamentous algae problems in your pond. For further information, or to schedule a free on-site consultation, please call AQUA DOC.

EXOTICS "MUSSEL" INTO OHIO

Since the 1800's, at least 136 exotic aquatic organisms of all types - including plants, fish, algae, and mollusks - have become established in the Great Lakes region.

Zebra Mussels are the exotic aquatic species that receives the most publicity. They are on the Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) list of 12 exotic species that are threats to the Great Lakes region.

Curly-leaf Pondweed and Eurasian Watermilfoil are two exotic aquatic plants that are on the GLIN select list and are very common in small lakes and ponds in Ohio. Curly-leaf was brought to North America in the 19th century. Milfoil was introduced in the 1940's in Florida, and spread through the Midwest from the 1950's through the 1980's

Rooted aquatic plant growth (often referred to as weeds) is expected in healthy lakes and ponds in Ohio. These plants provide structure and habitat for fish and many of the organisms on which they feed. Rooted plants also provide oxygen to the lake through photosynthesis.

Aquatic plant problems in Ohio are not caused because there are plants (weeds) growing. The problems are caused by characteristics of the exotics. For example, Eurasian Watermilfoil forms thick stands of tangled stems and vast mats of vegetation at the water's surface. These mats can interfere with water recreation such as boating, fishing, and swimming. These mats block sunlight penetration, eliminating beneficial plant growth and detrimentally impacting water chemistry beneath the mat.

Rooted plants are not the only exotic plants causing problems in Ohio ponds. A filamentous algae, Pithophora, has spread into Ohio from the south. This rough textured, steel wool like plant is becoming very common in Ohio. Pithophora, like other filamentous algae, forms a thick mat which can cover the ponds surface. However, Pithophora is resistant to chemical treatments, and is not eaten by white amurs.

Exotic aquatic species are continuing to enter Ohio. Purple loosestrife is a wetland plant that is becoming common in Ohio. This plant forms dense, impenetrable stands that are unsuitable for use as cover, food, or nesting sites for a wide range of animals. Eradicating an existing stand is difficult because one adult plant can disperse 2 million seeds per year. The plant is also able to resprout from roots and broken stems that fall to the ground.

AQUASHADE SPRING SPECIAL!

AQUASHADE® is a patented, concentrated liquid for reducing growth of unwanted weeds and algae in lakes and ponds. AQUASHADE® contains a specific blend of blue and yellow dyes which block out specific light wavelengths critical to photosynthesis. It is non-toxic, safe, and registered with the EPA. Application is easy. Pour directly from the bottle along the shoreline. One gallon will treat one surface acre of water with an average depth of four feet.

Regularly $42.95, AQUA DOC is selling AQUASHADE for $39.95 up to June 1.

MANAGING A LAKE VS. REACTING

Ponds are a beautiful and dynamic feature of any landscape. Many changes occur rapidly during the warm spring and summer seasons. Fish spawning adds millions of fry to the pond. The feeding of these swarms of fish causes many changes in the invertebrate and algae populations. Rooted plants begin regrowth in the spring and can cover extensive areas of a pond. Since there are many plant species found in Ohio ponds, this growth can occur at different times in different ponds or even within the same pond. Another type of plant, algae, are notorious for their boom and crash life cycles.

The weather determines the timing and extent of many of these changes. Hot or cold spells, rainstorms or drought, can cause many changes within a pond.

Effective pond management must take into account the dynamic and difficult to predict nature of ponds. Changes within a pond must be anticipated and responded to quickly. Reacting to a change after the problem has become established requires a much harsher treatment of the pond.

AQUA DOC's Full Season Program is designed to control nuisance plant growth with as little impact as possible on the rest of the pond. AQUA DOC will visit your pond every two weeks to continually monitor and evaluate changes within the pond. Treatments for nuisance plant growth will be performed early in the growth cycle when plants are more susceptible to treatments. These small, well timed treatments control plant growth much better than large treatments performed after the plant has become established. In addition, multiple small, well-timed treatments actually use less product than than a single large treatment.

AQUA DOC will custom design a program to fit your ponds needs and your budget. For a free consultation, please call us at 1-800-689-LAKE(5253).
